Few professions have a more natural claim on the interest of the reader than that of the surgeon, and Richard S. Weeder, a surgeon himself and the son and brother of surgeons, has spent his life performing the sort of precise, delicate, dangerous work that few of us would have the discipline to handle or the nerve to undertake. His father introduced him to the operating room at the age of seven, and by the age of twelve he was "scrubbing in" and acting as second or third assistant. Now, in mid-career, he has written a third-person memoir distilling the wisdom, the satisfactions, and the inevitable pain of loss that are the products of a surgeon's life.
It is that "view from behind the mask" he wants us to share as the cases present themselves -- the athlete paralyzed from the neck down, the young mother who has discovered a lump in her breast, the teacher brought in suffering from third degree burns covering 70 percent of her body. The patient work-up, the discussion with colleagues, the operations themselves -- sometimes routine, sometimes filled with terrible surprise and desperate crisis--are created with unforgettable clarity and impact.
But this world of high-tech medicine--dramatic and miraculous as it seems to the layman--is only the exterior setting. It is the human relationship that 'Surgeon' explores and celebrates--the delicate balance of compassion and detachment, scientific knowledge and intuitive perception that a good surgeon brings to his task, those unteachable qualities that enable him to sense the needs of his patient and be worthy of his patient's trust.
At the end of this book, Dr. Weeder tells of his decision to leave the practice of surgery and explains why he could no longer follow the path marked out for him by his father many years before.
